Frequently Asked Questions

ECAHLI welcomes applicants from every country. We work with accredited Brazilian immigration lawyers to support every international member through the visa and residency process. You do not need to have a visa before you apply — your application comes first.

Do I need a Brazilian visa before applying?
No. Apply first. ECAHLI assesses your skills, experience and values. If you are offered a role, our immigration team will guide you through the correct visa pathway for your nationality. We begin the visa process together — you do not carry it alone.
Which visa category applies to ECAHLI workers?
Most international workers will enter Brazil on a VITEM V (Work Visa), granted upon a signed CLT employment contract. Professionals in regulated fields (medicine, engineering, education) may require registration with the relevant Brazilian council (CFM, CREA, MEC). ECAHLI's legal team will advise you on the specific requirements for your profession and nationality.
How long does the visa process take?
Processing times vary by nationality and consulate. A standard VITEM V typically takes 4–12 weeks from submission. ECAHLI will provide all supporting documentation — your employment contract, housing guarantee letter, and financial support documents — from day one to minimise delays.
Can my family come with me?
Yes. Spouses, partners and dependent children are eligible for Dependent Visas (VITEM XI), processed alongside or after your work visa. ECAHLI provides housing for your full family from day one — a 2 or 3-bedroom home, free healthcare and free schooling for every child. All family members are fully included in the community. There are no additional costs for bringing your family.
Do I need to speak Portuguese?
Not before you arrive. ECAHLI is a multilingual community. Onboarding is conducted in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Afrikaans. Portuguese language classes are offered free to all international members and are part of your first-year integration programme. Proficiency is expected within 12 months for most roles, and full support is provided to get there.
Can I apply from Africa, Europe or Asia?
Yes — we actively encourage global applications. ECAHLI is a Dutch Foundation with a global network. We have members joining from South Africa, the Netherlands, Ireland, Poland, Latvia, the UK, the USA, Zimbabwe, Ghana, and beyond. If you have the right skills and values, your location is no barrier. Interviews are conducted by video call. Relocation support is provided.
Will ECAHLI sponsor my visa costs?
ECAHLI covers the cost of legal and immigration support for all successful applicants — including preparation of employer documentation, legal review and support from our retained immigration law firm. Government visa fees are the responsibility of the applicant, but are modest (typically R$200–R$450 BRL depending on category). We will confirm exact costs for your nationality at the time of your offer.
What happens to my visa if my role changes?
Once you are an Active Member, ECAHLI handles any visa amendments required when your role evolves or you transition to a new zone. Your immigration status is supported continuously by our legal team. After 4 years of continuous residence in Brazil, most nationalities become eligible to apply for Permanent Residency (RNE). ECAHLI will actively support this process.
